ABOUT ME

English speaking psychologist in Hamburg, Germany

I’m Jonathan Back, an English-speaking psychologist originally from the sunburnt shores of Australia, now living in the (not so sunny) city of Hamburg since 2013.

I provide psychotherapy exclusively in English, helping clients navigate the twists and turns of life with a mix of insight, empathy, and a dash of Aussie humour.

My objective? To walk alongside you as we explore who you truly are, to untangle the challenges that may be holding you back. In today’s complex world, cultivating self-awareness and self-compassion is essential for personal growth and resilience.

Having navigated the challenges of immigration myself, I deeply understand the struggles of adjusting to life in a new country. These experiences have taught me about cross-cultural understandings and being human, enabling me to offer empathic and culturally sensitive support to those facing similar transitions.

With extensive experience in both private practice and psychiatric hospital settings, I’ve supported individuals and groups in diverse environments, including a ‘live-in’ therapeutic role at The Kusnacht Practice in Switzerland.

Since 2016, I’ve also provided executive 24/7 therapeutic services for clients recovering from inpatient treatment, offering intensive, personalised support during critical life transitions.

As an expedition psychologist in Scotland, I accompany clients on therapeutic journeys in remote and challenging outdoor environments, fostering personal growth in transformative settings. Think of it as therapy, but with hiking boots and breathtaking views!

I specialise in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a scientifically validated approach that combines mindfulness and behavioral strategies to enhance psychological flexibility. Put simply – this means learning to embrace the present moment, handle life’s challenges with grace, and live a rich, meaningful life according to your values.
